Fire Department

Nestled within the tranquil streets of Ashmore, the Ashmore Fire Department stands as a beacon of safety and community resilience. Serving a vast area spanning 54 square miles and a population of about 2,000 residents, this dedicated group of volunteers embodies the essence of selflessness and service. Ashmore Fire Protection District (AFPD) is a separate entity from the Village of Ashmore municipality, and it operates completely on donations and approx 2% of the township's property tax revenues.

In 1954, a group of Ashmore men decided that a department needed to be organized to protect the growing town. On May 25, 1955, the Ashmore Fireman's Club officially met for the first time to establish the rules of conduct, emergency action plans, and to vote into existence the volunteer department. What started with 16 local men and a 1955 model fire truck pumper, quickly led to the Ashmore's first water tower and in-ground water system.

The AFPD's legacy is steeped in tales of bravery and sacrifice, although fortunately, there have been no serious injuries or fatalities in these first 70 years. Their mission goes beyond extinguishing flames; it's about protecting lives, homes, and the very essence of Ashmore itself. With an impressive response rate of 250 calls per year (fire, medical and assisting other agencies), these volunteers are the frontline defenders against disaster in their expansive rural territory.

The importance of the AFPD cannot be overstated. In a rural community where professional services may be scarce, these volunteers are the backbone of emergency response. Their swift action and intimate knowledge of the area are critical in mitigating the impact of fires and accidents, ensuring the safety and well-being of their neighbors.

But the AFPD's impact extends beyond its immediate duties. It's a symbol of unity and inspiration for the people of Ashmore. Children grow up admiring these brave men and women, dreaming of one day joining their ranks. By instilling values of courage and community engagement, the AFPD cultivates a sense of pride and belonging among residents, fostering a stronger, more resilient town.

In an ever-evolving landscape, the AFPD remains steadfast in its commitment to serve. Despite the challenges they face, their dedication never wavers. As long as there are volunteers willing to answer the call, the legacy of the Ashmore Fire Department will continue to burn brightly, guiding the town through both calm and crisis.
